Positive Experience For Kids Haircuts

Kids haircuts are important. It is a service that has been foundational to my salon’s success. I value all my guests but I promise you there is nothing like making a kid feel special in my chair.

So how do you make a special experience for those tiny customers? Here are some pro tips:

Parents, relax. I have seen so many anxious parents project their own anxiety about getting a trim onto their child. You’re in good hands.

Sit down and give the kid a minute to get acclimated. I do the talking and guide parent and child through the process.

When your kiddo sits in my chair, it’s ok for you, the adult to have a seat and simply relax. In all honesty I prefer that you do! No need to stand over us, by this time we’re off to a great start.

I explain the process the whole time I’m working. Kids are curious and inquisitive and they love to be involved. I often detangle hair first because kids hate having their hair pulled with a brush! I show them my combs, clips and spray bottle (this is very popular). As I’m showing off my cool stuff I’m working away and before ya know it, we’re done! I book for 20 minutes which is usually plenty of time for me.

When I am all finished I offer the option of hair gel or glitter. Let me tell you the kids go wild for this 1 little detail and they look forward to it time after time. Sometimes I have pops and seasonal candy to hand out. I also have some really cool toys in my coat closet that the kids look forward to playing with too.

My only rule is that I will not give a traumatic haircut experience to anyone. If the kiddo isn’t ready that’s fine by me. We can try again another time but it isn’t worth the aggravation to us all. Haircuts are supposed to be fun!
